Das HP StorageWorks 1000 Modular Smart Array (MSA1000) ist ein 2 Gbit Fibre-Channel-Speichersystem für Einstiegs- und Midrange-SANs (Storage Area Networks). Es bietet dem Kunden ein kostengünstiges, skalierbares und leistungsstarkes Speicherkonsolidierungssystem, das seine Investitionen schützt. Es wurde entwickelt, um die Komplexität und die Risiken von SAN-Implementierungen zu verringern. Durch ihre leistungsfähige, doch anwenderfreundliche Managementsoftware eignet sich die Lösung ideal für SANs in Abteilungen und an entfernten Standorten. Die Benutzer sparen Zeit und Geld, da die meisten Daten, Festplatten und Gehäuse, die derzeit direkt an Smart Array-Controller angeschlossen sind (DAS-Umgebung), problemlos in eine Umgebung mit gemeinsam genutzten Speicher (SAN) verlagert werden können. Durch Hinzufügen von zwei weiteren Laufwerksgehäusen können bis zu 42 U320 SCSI-Laufwerke der Enterprise-Klasse gesteuert und eine Kapazität von 12 TB erreicht werden. Die gesamte Software für Konfiguration, Management, Partitionierung und Lizenzierung ist kostenfrei in der Standardausstattung enthalten.
